Looking back at all the projects we have been involved with to date, together with those we are either working on currently or are in the pipeline to start, in terms of the industries we have direct experience of working with, it is literally a case of A – Z (Aerospace to Zoos!)

In view of this, whilst by no means exhaustive, we have attempted to compile of list of recognised industries, businesses from which we have worked with extensively. Although our own experience has demonstrated the diversity of activities performed within businesses classified as part of the manufacturing industry, having worked with a great many manufacturing companies to date, we have actually found that there are a range of issues which exist and opportunities to redress them which appear common to a large proportion of manufacturing businesses.

Invariably these businesses are highly dependent upon energy in their operations, energy consumption and costs are typically high in terms of overhead and production related costs to the business. As a result savings made can deliver a significant bottom line benefit to the business.

Ice cream, breakfast cereal and sea salt producers, breweries, together with vegetable processors, some large and some small count amongst the companies we have worked with to understand, monitor and reduce their energy consumption to date. In addition to growing pressure to reduce production and processing costs, many of these businesses seek to integrate and evidence the sustainability credentials of their business.

One of our earliest appointments back in 2008 involved working with a large sport and fitness operator to help them understand and then reduce their energy consumption at one of their sites on the South coast. Although a relatively new facility, the level of energy saving potential identified from our surveys was colossal. Suffice to say we were then appointed to implement the savings identified, exceeded the expected savings and continue to work with that customer today providing a range of energy management services to their sites across the UK.

We have also worked with a range of other nationwide and independent health and leisure operators. Energy consumption represents a major cost to these businesses, however due to the similarity in equipment installed in these types of businesses we have repeatedly identified a number of identical issues and opportunities for permanent energy savings.

Hotels, other types of holiday accommodation and tourist attraction providers have found themselves caught in a pincer movement for nearly a decade now. Falling demand and downward pressure on prices due to economic downturn, increasing competition and rising consumer awareness and demands for sustainability have all heaped pressure on to business owners and managers.

However, for the many companies we have helped in this sector, we have been able to bring sharp relief through improving their energy efficiency and in many cases reducing their reliance upon fossil fuels by implementing renewable energy systems. The net result lower energy consumption, costs and CO2e emissions leaving both the businesses and their customers with broad smiles on their faces!

Commercial offices, public buildings, warehouses and cold stores and retail premises commonly contain large amounts of energy consuming equipment operating for extended hours each day or even 24-7. In buildings housing lots of people heating and air conditioning is often found together with significant HVAC equipment back of house, much of it energy hungry to operate. Lighting is similarly a significant source of energy consumption.

We have found that upgrading lighting to energy efficient alternatives, implementing occupancy and zonal control and ensuring that heating and air conditioning controls are aligned to prevent both systems fighting with each other by operating simultaneously and optimising system operating times to match building occupancy have a dramatic impact on energy consumption. Schools, colleges, universities and student halls of residence frequently have high levels of energy demand over extended periods of the day. Upgrading energy consuming equipment to modern energy efficient alternatives and implementing robust Building Energy Management Systems to provide automatic control both combat user lethargy to “switch it off” allows temperature levels to be regulated (we all remember the freezing or boiling classroom or lecture room at school/university) and aligns equipment operation to when the buildings are in use. This approach has yielded significant savings for the organisations we have worked with.

Within Care Homes and similar healthcare environments we have found that heating, hot water, lighting and small power consumption are responsible for a significant proportion of a site’s energy consumption. Whilst maintaining a warm comfortable environment in areas used by residents is essential, ensuring high levels of thermal insulation in the building fabric and windows will significantly reduce the energy demand to maintain comfort conditions. Corridor lighting frequently operates 24-7, ensuring that low energy consumption light sources are installed will again drive down energy consumption. Due to the year round background heat requirement for this type of environment we have found that replacing fossil fuel powered heating equipment with renewable energy systems can pay for itself in a relatively short time period. Government subsidies further reduce the payback period for the capital investment.
